[English]

Marginal geopolitical regions play a specific role in obtaining and protecting national interests and national security of countries. South Asia (the Indian Subcontinent) is one of the most significant regions of this type, which is located in line with the waters of the Indian Ocean and intersects with the three geopolitical regions of the East, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and West Asia. With relation to Iran, this region is also a very important geopolitical marginal area. Iran benefits from deep cultural and historical as well as economic and security interests with the countries of this region. Consequently, whatever happens in South Asia affects Iran's national interests and security. This study aims at reviewing the basic geopolitical challenges of this region focusing on the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This is a descriptive-analytical research which follows library and field methods for collecting data, and a combined (quantitative-qualitative) method for data analysis. Field and library findings indicated that 15 variables and challenges affect the foreign policy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in South Asia.
