Recent social and political developments in Iran, particularly following the emergence of the so-called Woman, Life, Freedom movement, have renewed scholarly attention to the role of transnational media in shaping public discourse, cognitive influence, and soft power strategies. Within this context, the pattern of U.S. discursive influence in Iran deserves particular attention. This study examines the Tablet television program as a case study, given its sustained narrative construction of the opposition between the established order of the Islamic Republic and an alternative political order presented as the "Iranian Revolution."
The primary objective of this research is to identify and analyze the pattern of U.S. discursive influence in Iran by examining the dominant themes of the Tablet program and explaining the mechanisms through which it constructs social polarization. Employing a qualitative research design, the study applies a directed thematic analysis to 34 selected episodes broadcast in 2022 (1401 in the Iranian calendar).
The findings indicate that the Tablet program constructs a process of discursive influence through three interrelated mechanisms: (1) quasi-discourse construction centered on women's issues as the primary nodal point, (2) the strategic use of media symbols and metaphors to reproduce intersubjective meanings, and (3) the representation of Iranian society through a binary opposition between two competing identity camps. These mechanisms collectively contribute to the formation of a polarized interpretive framework that reinforces social divisions and, within the analytical framework of this study, contributes to the erosion of national cohesion.
