This study aims to provide a sociological analysis of the geopolitical consequences of the 2019 Tishreen Movement on the strategic relations between Iran and Iraq, with an emphasis on the representation of foreign influence and the Axis of Resistance. I
Methodology: Data were collected through field interviews, historical documents, media reports, and academic studies, and analyzed using open, axial, and selective coding within the framework of grounded theory. The analysis drew on sociological-political theories, including Tajfel’s social identity theory, Bourdieu’s concepts of field and capital, Giddens’ structuration theory, Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse theory, and Gramsci’s cultural hegemony, to elucidate the main themes.
The core phenomenon of the movement was the emergence of a trans-sectarian national identity, reinforced through anti-foreign slogans and digital mobilization. Intervening factors, such as internet censorship, the role of Najaf’s religious authorities, and the actions of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), influenced the trajectory of the protests. At the strategic level, digital mobilization, the role of women, and targeted sloganeering expanded the movement’s scope. Ultimately, the consequences of Tishreen included the strengthening of national identity, the weakening of the sectarian power-sharing system (Muhasasa), and the redefinition of Iran’s influence in Iraq.
Conclusion: The Tishreen Movement posed significant challenges to Iran-Iraq strategic relations, yet the Axis of Resistance and religious diplomacy mitigated these tensions. The study recommends a reevaluation of Iran’s diplomatic strategies and the enhancement of cultural dialogue to address these dynamics.
